About this painting: Umbrella Cockatoo 'Tiki'
The Umbrella Cockatoo is native to the islands of Indonesia and Australia. When surprised, it extends its large and striking crest, which has a semicircular shape similar to an umbrella. The undersides of the wings and tail are a vivid yellow. Umbrella Cockatoos can live up to and beyond, 80 years. The typical size is 17 to 19 inches long and they weigh over a pound for females and up to 1 ½ lbs for big males. Cockatoos nest in tree cavities. During the incubation period – about 28 days – both the female and male incubate the eggs. The chicks leave the nest at about 84 days.
Umbrella Cockatoos are very affectionate, bond closely with people and are valued for their beauty. While Cockatoos are not the most able speakers among parrots they can have an extensive vocabulary that is very relevant to their communication. They are often found in animal acts in zoos and amusement parks because they are naturally acrobatic, easily trained, highly social and intelligent.
