About this painting: Buffon's Macaw 'Margarita'
The Great Green or Buffon's Macaw is a seriously endangered species (approximately 100 individuals) as their native habitat is shrinking rapidly due to deforestation of tropical forests along the Caribbean coast of Central America.
Buffon’s macaws are mostly green with a bright red frontal patch and are among the largest of the Macaws with massive heads and beaks. As with all Macaws they are lively boisterous birds and require generous living space. Their beaks are large and strong for opening large nuts. Buffon’s macaws are distinguished from the similar but smaller Military Macaw by size and by a more vivid green color. The naked facial skin is white with black feather lines. The face blushes with excitement. The undersides of the wings are gold and the upper sides of the flights feathers are blue. Buffon’s eat primarily fruits, palm nuts and flowers, foraging beneath the forest canopy. Length is 30-35 inches and they weigh in as the heaviest Macaws at over 5 lbs. Life Span can be up to 50 years in the wild and longer in captivity.
