About this painting:   Scarlet Macaw 'Scarlette'
The Scarlet Macaw lives in tropical rain forests, open woodlands and costal lowlands of Central and South America. Their habitat runs from southern Mexico, Costa Rica and Panama, Guatemala and Belize, to Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, and Paraguay. Scarlet’s can be up to 21” long, of which more than half is the tail. The average weight is about 2 lbs. The Scarlet Macaw can live up to 50 years or longer. They eat mostly fruits, nuts and seeds and often forage on the forest floor. A typical sighting is of a pair flying above the forest canopy, or in flocks as they gather at clay licks. As pets, the Scarlets are more high strung than their Blue and Gold cousins, and slightly smaller. They are intelligent, mate for life and can be heard up to 3 miles away. The Scarlet Macaw lays two or three white eggs in a tree cavity. The female incubates the eggs for about five weeks, and the chicks fledge from the nest about 90 days after hatching and leave their parents about a year later.
