| About this painting: 'Hanging by a Beak' is the first in a group of pastel paintings I created when I returned from a trip to South America. I visited a wonderful sanctuary that had all types of parrots and toucans freely walking and climbing about on trees and gyms. Their flight wings were clipped so they could only flutter down and then have to climb back up. The Blue and Gold Macaws in this painting were competing for a big ear of corn at the top of the play gym. As a result, their acrobatics were facinating as they played and fed and preened. Their food troughs held fresh papaya, mango, corn on the cob and seeds of all kinds.
